May 21, 2026, marks Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). This day of action draws attention to the fact that digital services are still not equally accessible to all people—and that accessibility is not an "extra" but a prerequisite for genuine participation. The focus is on how websites, learning platforms, documents, and online tools can be designed so that they can be used without difficulty by people with different abilities, devices, learning requirements, and support needs. At the same time, it's about practical solutions: What can be improved immediately, which standards are important, and how can teams permanently integrate accessibility into their processes?
The eLeDia.summit takes up this occasion and translates the GAAD concept into concrete practice for digital education: In compact online sessions, we show how accessibility can be implemented in everyday life—not abstractly, but with directly applicable tips, tools, and examples. Moodle plays a central role in this: as one of the world's most widely used learning platforms, Moodle is the linchpin of digital learning for many organizations. This is precisely why Moodle is so interesting when it comes to accessibility. Because Moodle is not just "the platform" – Moodle is the place where learners navigate, consume materials, submit assignments, take tests, and communicate in forums or live sessions every day. If barriers arise here (e.g., unclear course structure, poorly formatted content, inaccessible files, or difficult interactions), this directly affects learning success and participation.
Why participate?
Accessibility is more than just a checkbox item: it improves the quality of learning for everyone, reduces support costs, and makes digital offerings future-proof.

Keynote Presentation on Universal Design for Learning
The presentation shows how learning opportunities can be designed to be inclusive, accessible, and flexible so that as many people as possible can benefit from them. In addition to a brief introduction to the basics, the focus will be on concrete practical examples and ideas for implementation. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity for discussion and questions.
Tips for accessibility in Moodle
This presentation offers practical tips on how to implement accessibility in Moodle and highlights measures that can be quickly applied in practice. The focus is on proven tips, real-world examples, and helpful platform features. Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity for discussion and questions.
Greater accessibility with text-to-speech
The workshop presents how Moodle content can be read aloud automatically and what advantages audio-supported learning offers in terms of accessibility, multilingualism, and motivation. The focus is on functions, application scenarios, and practical experiences from use. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity for discussion and questions.
Workshop on Accessible Documents
This workshop will introduce basic tools and methods for creating accessible documents. The focus will be on practical techniques for reviewing and optimizing content. We will explore helpful tools, suitable file formats, and ways to make materials accessible to all learners.
Checking accessibility in Moodle
The workshop will introduce the integrated accessibility check, which automatically analyzes Moodle courses and identifies specific areas for improvement. The focus will be on reports, automatic fix tools, and alternative file formats for learners. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity for discussion and questions.
Accessible online conferences with BBB
The presentation shows how live sessions can be made inclusive and what features BigBlueButton offers for this purpose—from subtitles and chat to screen reader support. The focus is on technical possibilities and didactic best practices for accessible online meetings. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity for discussion and questions.
Why accessibility is important.
Why is accessibility important for my organization?
Accessibility not only improves participation, but also usability for all learners. Clearly structured content, audio support, and effective online moderation enhance the overall quality of learning. This means you are simultaneously investing in quality, satisfaction, and future-proofing.
What role do tools play in the Moodle context?
Tools such as accessibility checks and text-to-speech help teams systematically identify and reduce barriers. They make accessibility measurable and facilitate continuous improvement. This transforms accessibility from a one-time task into a sustainable process.
Why is accessibility worthwhile in the first place?
Accessibility improves the usability of digital learning resources for everyone—not just for people with disabilities. Clearly structured content, intuitive navigation, and alternative formats have been shown to enhance the quality of learning and user satisfaction. At the same time, they reduce support requests, misunderstandings, and dropouts.
Does accessibility really improve learning success?
Many strategies benefit all learners: clear structure, audio support, clear language, and flexible access options. Learners can engage with content at their own pace and in their preferred format. This boosts motivation, understanding, and completion rates.
