2-factor authentication

More security with 2-factor authentication in Moodle

You already know it from many platforms: When logging in, an additional confirmation is required in addition to the password - this is called 2-factor authentication. This method increases security considerably, as a stolen password alone is no longer sufficient to log in.

2-factor authentication now also in Moodle

By default, login to Moodle is with username and password. Since Moodle 4.3, 2-factor authentication can optionally be activated to improve the protection of your Learning Management System .

There are several options available for 2-factor authentication in Moodle that make the login process more secure:

  • Mail code: Moodle sends a unique code to the e-mail address provided. This must be entered within a certain time to complete the registration.
  • Authenticator app: Users use a mobile app (e.g. Google Authenticator) that generates regularly changing codes. These codes must be entered in addition to the password when logging in.
  • Security keys: Hardware-based authentication with USB or NFC security keys or biometric data such as fingerprints.
  • IP address check: Moodle can specify that only certain IP ranges are considered trustworthy. Users must then log in from a specific network to gain access.

Why is activation worthwhile?

  • More security: Protects against unauthorized access, even if the password is known.
  • Flexibility: Choose the method that best suits your requirements.
  • Data protection compliant: Meets current security standards for sensitive data.
