AI and learning

AI and learning - What does this mean for Moodle?

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been on everyone's lips for over a year - but what role can it play in education? The question of AI and learning raises many issues:

  • How can AI help to create learning content efficiently?
  • What support does AI offer learners during the learning process?
  • Are learners allowed to use AI to take exams?
  • How do you recognize whether examinations have been carried out with AI support?
  • Which data protection aspects must be taken into account?

The Moodle community is also intensively discussing how AI and learning can be brought together in the future. A first result: The recently published AI principles for Moodle. These stipulate that AI must be human-centered, transparent and ethical. In addition, platform operators should be able to decide for themselves which AI functions they activate. The course on AI in the Moodle Academy is also very helpful for familiarizing yourself with the topic of AI.

First steps towards AI integration in Moodle

At the same time, the development of an AI subsystem was announced. In Moodle 4.5 (planned for October 2024), an open interface is to be provided via which external AI tools such as ChatGPT or Midjourney can be used - for example to generate learning content or test questions.

AI in Moodle - already possible today?

The first AI functions are already available in Moodle. The integrated TinyMCE editor offers a paid AI extension that can, for example, optimize or summarize texts. We at eLeDia are currently examining its possible applications for Moodle platforms.

Tip: Moodle Academy course on AI

If you want to delve deeper into AI and learning, you can take the basic course on AI in the Moodle Academy (English). There you will learn how AI can support course leaders, how to use generative AI tools such as ChatGPT to create effective prompts for your Moodle courses and what ethical issues the use of AI in education raises.

The future of AI and learning is exciting - and we're staying tuned! What's your opinion? Discuss it with us!
