Barrier-free learning

Accessible learning - New legal regulations affect everyone

When it comes to barrier-free access, many people think of ramps or elevators. But accessibility concerns much more: digital services such as learning platforms must also be accessible for people with disabilities.

This is not just about people with recognized disabilities. Around 5-10% of the population have color vision deficiency, others have cognitive or motor impairments. Accessible learning platforms enable all users to have an optimal learning experience - regardless of their individual needs.

What will change in 2025?

Until now, the Barrier-free Information Technology Ordinance (BITV) has mainly applied to public institutions. However, from June 28, 2025, the Barrier-Free Strengthening Act will also oblige the private sector, clubs and associations to make digital services accessible. This explicitly includes learning platforms.

There is good news for Moodle users: Moodle has long complied with the international WCAG 2.1 AA+ standard. This provides the technical basis. But what about the content of your courses?

Are your Moodle courses accessible?

Technical accessibility alone is not enough - the content must also be accessible. We are currently developing services that you can use to check your courses and make them accessible.
